Hi Eddie,

Is the linkage sloppy? When was the clutch last adjusted? Does the transmission just not want to go into reverse gear? Have you tried to double clutch in Neutral at a stop, and try reverse again?

if it is dead solid and won't go anywhere I would suspect the lock out pins. what model car is it?

hi guys
did not even back out of garage.....tried double clutching it....nothing...
just does not want to go into reverse.....nada.....i could have snapped the
shifter arm if i wanted to.......its a '62 GTE series 1.....
all the other gears were smooth....as buttah...
can i do something w/o having to take the tranny out???
i was hoping a loose linkage screw or something???
when you say pin....how hard a of a fix???
by the way the last few times i had her out it was gradually not wanting to get into reverse....so it must have been something lossening up....???
thanks

I would drain the oil out of the gearbox checking for metal bits. My thoughts are that the reverse idler is shot like so many other ferrari transmissions from 250 to 308 and TR. What is wrong with those guys!!!

Anyhow, a reverse idle gear spins all the time on this shaft and the shaft is often not machined/hardened/substantial, and over time it dis-allows the gear to slide back as it is supposed to.

Don't drive it too much until you check the oil, and to fix the reverse idler means pulling the trans apart.

if need be you can pull the tunnel and the top cover and at least see what going on if it is a linkage problem you will more than likely be able to fix it in the car. If there is any damage then you will more than likely have to pull the trans. until you find out what exactly is going on I would refrain from any driving in the forward gears, would hate for a piece of hardened steel to do more damage if preventable.

ok this is for the stupid files......
there was nothing wrong with the reverse...it works perfectly.......
the problem was with the owners brain....
i havent used the car in a while and forgot it was'nt a five speed....
so... all the way to the right and UP is reverse, not down......duh!!!

i need a vacation to get reaquainted with the cars.........

Ypu are indeed an honest person . You could easily told us all about how you were able to fix it through great skill and dexterity, but alas you chose the truth. In the future never pass an oportunity to impress other Ferrari owners with your luck or skill. With your obvious superior character perhaps you should run for office, wait nix that , you would not fit in.

the real victory here is that you remembered BEFORE you pulled the tranny!

don't feel to bad I have actually called one of my customers to ask them how to remove the key from the ignition on their Saab, before remembering to get it out the car has to be in reverse

My old boss took his new 320 BMW into the main dealer fter two months of ownership to complain about the power steering being heavy (It used to be ok) The grease monkey looked at the car called the sales manager then the customer only to be told IT DOES NOT HAVE POWER STEERING
