Button Cover

On the Green GTC I’m prepping for show, there’s a little access hole on the driver’s side rear panel that the emergency trunk release cable can be found, and it was missing its cover plug. I had an original one to copy off another car.

I shaped a disc of steel to the same size and drilled a hole for the threaded stud where I’ll secure a clip. I used a piece of stainless steel hose clamp to make up the clip.

To create the slight dome and to hide the stud, I used some epoxy putty to form the shape of the disk. I then took some of the left over leather I had the upholsterer set aside for me to make up the cover for the button.

The trick to the cover, is the leather has to shaved thin, or skived. They make a nice hand tool to do this, but I bent a single edged razor blade to do the same thing.

With the leather paper thin, it will allow it to be folded over, pie cut, and glued tightly to the underside of the button. Without skiving, the leather would be too thick to work over such a small radii.

Here’s the finished product, waiting to bring back another point to this show car!
