Inner Tubes and Valve stems

Post by Steve Meltzer »

For the first time in 22 years, I got a flat tire on my GTC. The shop said it was due to a tear where the valve stem attaches to the inner tube. I remember hearing about using some sort of sleeve to protect the stem, but I'm wondering if anyone has any specific suggestions or if this even really works. Perhaps I've just been lucky. (the wheels are Borranis)

thanks
steve

Steve, The Borranis have a metal sleeve that covers the rubber valve stem. It is to protect the stem and to make the rubber stem look better. They were OEM from the factory, but many were lost over the years. FYI the FOC check this during concours judging. They can easily be made or supplied from Motion Products/Parker Halls catalog.

Whoa! Just checked these out and they are $325 for a set of five! From the catalogue description, they were only used with Perelli tires so I guess I'm off the hook since my GTC originally came with Michelins or maybe Dunlops. Right? Thanks, Steve.

Steve, I do not think the tires have anything to do with this, it is the Borranis and the rubber valve stem that are the focus. That price is way too much for some metal covers. Look around or check Discount tire as I recall they have something similar, and free.

Those metal protectors were for Pirelli tubes, they have a bit more rubber around
the metal valve.
They are not usually on the GTC/GTS , I have only seen them on earlier cars with Pirelli
tires . I have seen this happen on tube type tires that don't have protectors and if the tube is
22 years old it is going to happen.

They were out of them at Motion and Greg Jones just used his last set so they may not be
available. We made some out at our shop and they look great, I agree there are some that
are really close on some tire websites.

Thanks guys. I know about the protectors because I have them on my Pirelli-tired (I didn't know that was a verb) Lusso. However, the flat tire was on my GTC with Michelins, so no need for those overpriced protectors. Thanks again.
